Transport Canada

Transport Canada's mission is to develop and administer policies, regulations and programs for a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible transportation system. Transport Canada's Atlantic Region is responsible for the implementation and administration of those policies, regulations and programs in Atlantic Canada.

The Office of the Regional Director General (RDG) oversees operations of all the branches in the Atlantic Region. The RDG represents the minister and the department in the region, and brings the region's perspective to the Departmental Executive Management Committee.

The majority of Transport Canada's regional workforce consists of technical inspectors who ensure compliance with and enforcement of standards and regulations within federal jurisdiction. Aviation inspectors regularly conduct inspections and audits to ensure that the aviation industry complies with regulations and standards. Marine Safety inspectors' responsibilities are related to the safety of ships and the protection of life, goods and the environment. Inspectors from the Surface branch promote and regulate safety in rail transportation and in the transportation of dangerous goods by road or rail. Security and Emergency Preparedness inspectors ensure compliance with security regulations through awareness, inspection and enforcement.

Transport Canada officers also protect public investment and interests in the Atlantic Region's airports, harbours, and ports through effective oversight, monitoring and lease management. Policy officers support the RDG in managing and coordinating a wide range of economic and transportation related issues in Atlantic Canada as well as administration of various agreements for the Confederation Bridge.

The addition of the Infrastructure and Communities files to the Minister of Transport's portfolio undoubtedly raises the Minister's profile in the overall government hierarchy. This can be seen as further recognition of the critically important role of transportation in Canada. Transportation remains one of Canada's key economic enablers and Transport Canada Atlantic Region will continue to promote the safety, security, efficiency and sustainability of the national transportation system through the administration of programs and the enforcement of regulations and standards.
